The rules

How the dates are worked out

The calculator applies these rules exactly as the official sources state them.

Annual accounts
9 months after the end of the accounting period for a private company, 6 months for a public company. The company type is the one it had just before the period ended. Source: Companies Act 2006, section 442: period allowed for filing accounts (opens in a new tab)
Counting months
To the exact day: the deadline is the same date in the later month. A period ending on the last day of a month is due on the last day of the later month. A 29th or 30th that lands in February is due on the last day of February. Source: Companies Act 2006, section 443: calculation of period allowed (opens in a new tab)
First accounts
When the first accounts cover more than 12 months: 21 months after incorporation for a private company or 18 months for a public company, or 3 months after the end of the period if that is later. Source: Life of a company - Part 1 accounts (GOV.UK) (opens in a new tab)
First year end
Companies House sets a new company's first accounting reference date to the last day of the month in which the first anniversary of incorporation falls. Source: Life of a company - Part 1 accounts (GOV.UK) (opens in a new tab)
Shortened period
The later of the normal deadline and 3 months after the date of the notice that shortened the period (form AA01). Source: Companies Act 2006, section 442: period allowed for filing accounts (opens in a new tab)
Confirmation statement
Due within 14 days after the review period ends. The review period is 12 months beginning with the day of incorporation, or with the day after the last confirmation date. Source: Companies Act 2006, section 853A: duty to deliver confirmation statements (opens in a new tab)
Sundays and bank holidays
An accounts deadline that falls on a Sunday or a bank holiday does not move. The accounts must still be delivered by that date. Source: Life of a company - Part 1 accounts (GOV.UK) (opens in a new tab)

Questions

Filing deadline questions

When are a private company's annual accounts due?
9 months after the end of its accounting period, to the exact day. A year end of 4 April gives 4 January. When the year end is the last day of a month, the deadline is the last day of the month: a year end of 30 April gives 31 January.
When are a public company's annual accounts due?
6 months after the end of its accounting period, counted the same way.
When are a company's first accounts due?
When the first accounts cover more than 12 months: 21 months after incorporation for a private company or 18 months for a public company, or 3 months after the end of the period if that is later. First accounts covering 12 months or less follow the normal period.
What if the accounting period was shortened?
The deadline is the later of the normal deadline and 3 months after the date of the notice that shortened the period (form AA01).
When is a confirmation statement due?
Within 14 days after the end of the review period. The first review period is the 12 months beginning with the day of incorporation; each later one begins the day after the last confirmation date.
Does an accounts deadline move when it falls on a Sunday or a bank holiday?
No. GOV.UK says the accounts must still be delivered by that date, so the calculator never moves a deadline.
